Midcentury Memories. The Anonymous Project

A look at how hundreds of anonymous people recorded their existence

Back in the mid-20th century, before Instagram and Snapchat appeared, people used 35mm cameras with color film to record both monumental and mediocre moments in their lives.People took pictures of their loved ones, vacations, and celebrations. We celebrated the birth of a baby, a child dressed as a cowboy, a new color television set, a national park tour, fishing trips, relaxation on the beach, weddings, office parties, family reunions, holding hands, kissing and dancing.Imagining the story behind these lives and images is also why these anonymous projects are an attractive journey to the past. The book's narratives, which begin with scenes from childhood and end with scenes from old age, further highlight the passage of time and every stage of life in between.

It all started with naive purchases on eBay.After purchasing an anonymous family photo, the 35mm Kodachrome slide set, filmmaker Lee Schulman was fascinated by the emotional value of a piece of life and thought he should keep more.He started an anonymous project in 2017, and has since secured about 700,000 images through donations or vintage sellers. In his introduction, noted photographic critic Richard B. Woodward wrote: It is very meaningful and interesting that in almost every image, the photographer and the subject seem to know each other. No one exists in this album of inclusive humanity in isolation. There are no strangers here.

Composed of more than 300 images taken between the 1940s and 1970s, this select collection gives an intimate glimpse into the lives of anonymous subjects. We don't know where to shoot, the date, the subject, but we're familiar with these pictures taken by experienced amateur photographers and the interesting stories in them.
